Portable vs installed
SwizzinIRC comes as an installer and as a portable executable. They are the same program.
| Installed | Portable | |
|---|---|---|
| Install step | Run SwizzinIRC-<version>-setup.exe |
None. Run SwizzinIRC-<version>-portable.exe from any folder |
| Administrator rights | Not required (installs for the current user) | Not required |
| Shortcuts | Start Menu and Desktop | None |
| Appears in Installed apps | Yes | No |
| Default data folder | %APPDATA%\com.swizards.swizzinirc |
%APPDATA%\com.swizards.swizzinirc |
Both use the same data folder by default, so switching between them keeps your servers, aliases, themes, scripts and preferences.
Keeping all data beside the program
Section titled “Keeping all data beside the program”To make a self-contained copy, create an empty file named portable.flag in the same folder as the executable. SwizzinIRC then stores its data in a SwizzinIRC-data folder beside the executable.
- The flag is read when the program starts. Restart after adding or removing it.
- Nothing is copied or moved for you. To bring existing settings along, copy the contents of
%APPDATA%\com.swizards.swizzinircintoSwizzinIRC-datayourself. - If the folder beside the program cannot be written to, SwizzinIRC falls back to the per-user folder and shows a warning.
- The environment variable
SWIZZIN_CONFIG_DIR, when set, takes priority over both.
To see which folder is in use and why, open Appearance → Import & folder.
Passwords
Section titled “Passwords”Passwords are never written to the data folder. They are kept in Windows Credential Manager, in entries whose names end in .SwizzinIRC. A portable data folder therefore does not carry saved passwords to another computer.
